What the symptoms tell you

Ground movement, loads, poor bedding or long-term deterioration can lead to structural failure. Check for recurring blockages, subsidence of paving or visible debris in chambers.

The pattern matters: a problem confined to one appliance points somewhere different from an obstruction affecting a whole group of fittings. Keep track of when it happens, whether it follows rain or household use, and what work has already been tried.

What to check before paying for repairs

A blocked drain is not necessarily a collapsed drain. Look for consistent evidence rather than relying on one smell, noise or damp mark. Do not remove heavy chamber covers or put your hands into wastewater.

What the investigation should establish

A camera survey may help establish the location before excavating. Ask to be shown the affected location and the evidence supporting any proposed excavation, relining or replacement.

Safety: If sewage is backing up or overflowing, stop using the affected appliances where possible, keep children and pets away, and seek appropriate help. Never enter a drain or manhole. If wastewater is near electrical equipment, avoid the area and seek qualified advice.

Before you agree to major work

Get the proposed work and its limits in writing. For costly repairs, ask for photographs or survey evidence locating the defect and consider a second quotation. Where the affected run may be shared or adopted, check ownership before arranging privately funded work.
